[ oh no he did NOT ]

[ if eijun could actually just shove his feet into his skates and run onto the ice just to take him on as quick as humanly possible, he would be doing just that. however, enough lessons and time as a professional skater has taught him to be good about lacing his skates. it doesn't mean he's going to do it slowly, and the fact that furuya does a bracket turn in front of him just makes him go even faster, making an "rrrrrghhh" noise that's more doglike than it is anything else. it's not like bracket turns are particularly showy--he's doing it to show off his skills. and eijun can do that!! eijun could bracket turn SQUARES around furuya satoru!!

he ties his laces as fast as possible and now actually does basically stampede onto the ice. it's familiar under his skates, and he should probably warm up since furuya's been here for a while but eijun's not above trying to one up his rival in. literally anything, even when they're teams. ]
You weren't supposed to be in here yet!!

[ he exclaims, pointing at him as he skates a loop to try and pick up some speed, and then promptly goes for a jump from one of his old routines, a clockwise triple axel, timing it to land at least in furuya's path. HA. ]

[It's singularly irritating how Sawamura can throw his skates on and take to the ice like he was born to it. Someone who seems that graceless should be all joints and angles out here, tripping over his own feet, but Satoru's seen Sawamura up close enough times in competition to know that couldn't be further from the truth. It's even more obvious up close, though. It's like he never got the memo that this shouldn't be so natural for someone because the instant he hits the ice, it's effortless.

Satoru finds himself watching him as much as trying to show off for him, which just irritates him more in addition to yanking him right out of his routine. It's good that he is paying attention, however, since suddenly Sawamura's landing right in his path. Rude. Satoru pulls up short and twists the blades of his skates, sending an arc of snow in Sawamura's direction. It's low, only pattering around his ankles and blades, but it gives Satoru enough time to start side stepping away before pushing off into a new glide.]

I was early.

[At least he's not accusing Sawamura of being late?]

I was trying to be early!!!

[ which he clearly wasn't, because he overslept, because he was up late the night before watching tape, but that's not the point. eijun makes a face as his ankles get covered in powder, and he shakes either of his skates off before he turns right back around to follow right at his heels.

really, this kind of productivity isn't new, but maybe eijun's coaches'll be glad to see him so motivated. nothing lights a fire under his ass quite like furuya, who has beaten him in countless competitions. whether that fire is going to work to their advantage as doubles partners or ruin things, well, who knows? eijun still thinks chris is maybe a little bit crazy for deciding this, but chris is also always right, so in the end he'd just given up and agreed to it.

it does feel nice to warm up like this, even as he picks up his speed to try and get side by side with furuya. this is not speed skating, eijun. ]
I don't even know what we're supposed to be doing yet, but, we're supposed to do it--together, or whatever! Furuya!!!

You weren't.

[Early, that is. Because Satoru was. He was here before you, Sawamura. Neener neener.

It's not surprising when Sawamura gives chase. Satoru skates backwards so he can keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn't do anymore stunts like jumping out in front of him, but also just to watch him. It's clear he's been working, possibly since the news of their getting paired up. Satoru wants to be pleased at the speed Sawamura's able to put up now because it means he won't have to slow down, but on the other hand speed is his thing, and if he can't keep up with Sawamura's moves then he's going to get outshone and that's not what he wants at all here.

Some distant part of him knows the real goal is to work together and not for either of them to be the individual star but right now that doesn't really matter.]

Me either. I think it's just a joint skate.

[At least that's what his grandfather had said. Get to know him better, things like that. Sawamura's always piqued Satoru's interest, but he can't help his natural resistance to all of this. They're competitors. How are they supposed to work together?]

[ yeah, there's no way eijun's ever going to be able to keep with furuya at his fastest. it's frustrating, because no matter how many times his mentors tell him not to focus on that, it's not going to ever stop eijun from thinking about it. no matter how much he trains up his speed, it's just not enough.

shoving his hands in the pockets of his warmups, eijun glides forward, keeping up with him pretty effortlessly for now. who knows how long that'll last, but it is at least acting as a good warmup. chris'd scold him for just jumping in like he'd done, but eijun couldn't help it. there's something about furuya satoru that just makes him want to beat him at everything.

which is really, really not conducive to pair skating. ]
Did they tell you anything about anything? Chris-senpai was just like, Sawamura, you have to do it! And then I had to say yes, cause it was Chris-senpai. I've never done a pair skate ever!

[ eijun's grumbling fills up the room like always--his chatter is loud and nonstop, and his energy, if harnessed, could turn this rink into a swimming pool. ]
staminaroll: (you are the answer)

[Satoru's not speeding up yet but it's mostly because for all that he doesn't want to be doing this, he's also vaguely curious how it'll go. Practicing a sport like figure skating was somewhat isolating for him growing up; being a phenom at it was very isolating, to the point that he was shunned on local ponds even while others touted him as the future. He has his grandfather, of course, but even people his own age to talk to are hard to come by.

Sawamura could be someone like that, if Satoru can just get past his intense need to be better than him at everything he does.]

A little. It's a publicity thing but it means we can't compete in singles anymore, or until we split up again. I've never skated in a pair before either.

[Hiss, hiss, hiss of blades on ice for a moment--if Sawamura will let him have a second without talking.]

Who's Chris-senpai?

[ skating in pairs on the other hand, isn't totally weird for eijun--he's constantly been surrounded by friends growing up, and he used to hold wakana's hand and lead her backwards across the rink back home in nagano. it's not weird for him to be sharing the ice with someone, but it is weird to be doing it with furuya satoru, especially in this context.

pair skating requires partnership and friendship, two things he's never even thought about pursuing with his rival. it's weird, but maybe it won't be all that bad. probably?

furuya better not drop him.

eijun latches onto the conversation topic easily though, just fine to continue steamrolling and ranting on as he skates with furuya, keeping up with him as naturally as anything. ]
Chris-senpai's my coach. He used to be an Olympian!! He's really awesome, and sometimes I think he's not right but he's always been right, so I guess he's gonna be right about this too.

[ loudly, puffily. ] He used to pair skate too. [ pshhh, pshhhh.... eijun's pouting a little. ] So I guess...

[ and then he turns around, abruptly, and stops a little bit in front of furuya, holding out his fist. ] If we're gonna have to be partners, we have to be champion partners!

[Satoru's never considered it either, though that's equal parts because they're rivals and therefore that sort of thing simply isn't part of their relationship, but also because he's never thought Sawamura would be interested. He's never been very good at making friends, whereas it's obvious even when he's interacting with the media that Sawamura considers most of the world to be his friend already. It's an outlook Satoru envies somewhat, but he's not sure how he's going to fit into it now.

While Sawamura talks, Satoru takes the opportunity to watch his feet, adjusting his own steps until they match Sawamura's. It's not the most natural feeling in the world (in particular, it feels slooooow), but he's going to have to learn if this is going to work. That's the most important thing. They have to make it work.

It's only because he's still watching their feet that he sees the change in Sawamura's position fast enough to react. That was a quick turn... Satoru looks at his hand for a long moment before he realizes what's going on, then lifts his own and bumps it against Sawamura's.]
Champions.

... But first you have to get faster and smooth out your lines. I won't become a mess just to match you more closely.

[ the fistbump heartens something in eijun--he feels the promise of teamwork for a moment, another chance to reach out and grab the glory he's yelling about always in one way or another. achieving championship dreams with furuya satoru is a new way to look at them, but sawamura eijun's optimism is boundless, and there's not a second where he doubts the fact that they could. it puts a sure look on his face, a smile that shows teeth.

...right up until furuya says he has to get faster.

eijun squawks. ]
I'M NOT A MESS!!! FURUYA!!! I'LL SHOW YOU A MESS!!!

[ which... he will. competitive fire officially lit, he takes off to try and go his fastest! and his smoothest! as a true champion will do!!

(this is a bad idea to compete over. will they actually be alright: who knows.) ]
staminaroll: (guess what?)

[personal profile] staminaroll 2016-09-20 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Satoru's never really been one to easily share a rink. When he was at home, first discovering that his abilities on the ice weren't like that of the other kids, it was because he easily outpaced them and couldn't understand why they couldn't keep up. By the time he started training and realized he had something rough but exceptional to offer, most of the people who might've otherwise been there had drifted off, put off by his intensity and closed off style. Finally, when he'd had his breakthrough to professional skating, well, you just didn't share ice then. You had to make it your own.

So when the atmosphere changes just for a second after their hands (gloves) touch, he's a little surprised, but it fades as soon as Sawamura opens his mouth. This is the person he has to learn to share with?

Does he not see that yelling just makes him messier?

Satoru just watches for a moment, unable to see much difference except that Sawamura certainly looks like he's working really hard. It's that observation that gets him to follow after, though. He's not letting anybody work harder than he does, especially not someone he's going to have to perform with instead of against.

Right now, however, it's one hundred percent against. Satoru bends low in an imitation of a speed skater and works to catch up to Sawamura. Who knew he could sprint like that?]
